Russian team caught halibut and big cod!

A couple of weeks ago a big Russian team visited us at Nordic Safari, Mehamn.

The plan for the week was to fish as big fish as the weather allowed each day. Because the weather was not the best outside Mehamn during the week we trailed our three Dolmoys to one of the big fjords. It is really great that even when it’s really much wind we can almost always find shelter somewhere around the peninsula! With us these days we had our new big boat, the Minor 34. During the week the guests caught 15 halibuts where the biggest was 140cm (40-43 kilos). Now at late season the halibuts are really fat so we have to estimate how much heavier they are then on the halibut length/weight list. We add between 5-15% depending how much fatter they looks. Also this week we caught two really nice cods, one 17 kilos and one 15 kilos fjord cod. That means that these cods are local in the fjord and stays there all their lives. the 17 kilos cod was caught on Mieko predator tail and the other one with pilk.

We also went out with our biggest boat Odd Tore one morning from Mehamn to fish for cod! The group caught a lot of different species and a couple of big cods, the biggest cod for the day were about 10 kilos.

On our way out on Barents Sea!

Revisiting the magical sea char lake!

A couple of weeks ago I (John) and our receptionist Darja decided to go fishing on our free day. Darja had talked all season how much she wanted to be guided on some great fishing so she could catch here first fish, and more important have a photo with a fish published on the blog!

We went with our new quad bikes to the magical sea char lake where I had guided a couple of fishing groups before. When arrived at the lake I instructed Darja how to use a spin rod and some tips and tricks how to make the sea char bite! As all other things Darja gets to try for the first time she very quickly learned how to cast. It did not take long time until she had hooked a sea char and then she caught 4 more during the day. Even if the weather situation where not the best we succeeded to catch 23 sea char all and all.

Next fishing challenge for Darja is next season when I bring here on halibut fishing!

On our way to the lake with our new quadbikes.

It's crazy how clear the water is!

Halibut video

Earlier this season our guide John brought our trainee Albin out to one of our best halibut spots. It took only two hours for Albin to hook his dream fish! Take a look at the video!

The halibuts keep on biting!

Kristoffer from our Swedish travel agent Mieko Fishing was visiting us to learn more about Nordic Safari, Mehamn and the fishing we are focusing on. He tagged along with our guide John on halibutfishing two days.  Here is the result!

New Guide boat!

We are happy to present our new boat for guided fishing tours, a Minor 34 feet offshore boat, a boat which is of walk around model.

The boat does 30 knots at cruising speed and 40 knots at maximum. This makes our fishing and sightseeing territory a lot bigger in the future.
This boat will be used for a lot of adventures such as: Halibut fishing, skrei fishing in wintertime, King Crab fishing safaris, shuttle boat for Cape Nordkyn hikers and sightseeing tours around Nordkyn peninsula and its surroundings. Also safety boat for our boat rental customers.
The boat can carry up to 8 passengers which makes it a great boat to charter!

Welcome aboard! Let’s go fishing!

//Vidar The Viking!

It got a lot of space to fish from!

And high rails all around the boat!

I can’t wait until we go out and fish with this boat for the big cod called skrei that are spawning close to the coast from the end of February to end of April. The sooner you fish on the season the bigger possibility to catch the really big cods but at the same time the sooner on the season you fish the more unstable weather. That’s why this boat really comes to its right during these conditions!
Also the fishing after the exotic spotted wolfish and the blue halibut which both lives outside Mehamn but really far out on deep water will be easy accessible with our new Minor 34!

Halibut 180cm!!!

The other week we had a Russian team here at Nordic Safari and it was their third visit at us during one year!

The week started with bad weather but day 3 we finally got out on some fishing.  Me (John) and Arthur was guiding in each Dolmoy boat. First we fished after cod on a 100m deep ground top where we also caught a couple of redfish. Later same day we focused on halibut and Arthurs boat lost three halibuts, one after it been all the way up to the boat, it was about 30 kilo. One of the halibuts he had on earlier was a lot bigger.

Day 4 we went back to the same place and already at the first drift Igor hooks something really huge but because he recently injured his shoulder had to give up the fight after a while and let Arthur get the beast up. After another 20 minutes and 4 runaways all the way down to 130-160m the monster halibut finally breaks the surface! This halibut was to big bringing into the boat so we tight it up outside the boat. Me and Artur jumped into the water, wearing our dry suites to measure the halibut all the way to 180cm which is about 80 kilo according halibut length/weight list. Right after this halibut we caught in my boat a halibut that gave a really intense fight and then measured to 142cm. After this halibut the wind died so we decided to try to find cod and coalfish on deep ground rocks. This fishing was rather slow and we only caught 1-2 kilos coalfish, which is really fun on light gear but we wanted the bigger model of coalfish this day . Later on our way back to the marina on the end of the day we tried one last drift at the halibut place and directly we caught a 145cm halibut!

Day 5 was also bad weather but day 6 we took a trip up to the mountains trying our luck on brown trout. After one hour great walk we arrived to the lake. The fishing started slow but in the end of the day we had caught 13 fat trout’s, biggest one about 1,5 kilo!

180cm!

A verry tasty redfish.

Fishing small coalfish with light gear is really fun!

Barents sea is boiling of fish!

Great arctic char fishing!

Our fresh water guide Dan where away the other day on an expedition to a lake with a great population of arctic char here on Nordkyn peninsula.

First he tried with spin rod and copper spoon bait but the char refused to bite on this but then when he tried his fly rod the arctic char was biting almost before the fly hit the water!

During a couple of hours he caught 19 arctic char where the biggest one was 1,9 kilo. The most impressive thing is that the smallest char was as big as 0,7 kilo!

Dan releasing a beautilful arctic char.

Two arctic chars was brought back home for a great dinner!

Halibut and Coalfish

These last three days we have had a team from Russia here at Adventure Camp Mehamn.
The first day of guiding was focused one Halibut, John and Artur was guiding in each Dolmoy 230.

Day 1 Fishing started rather slow  but after a couple of hours the guides found the right place for the day and the Russian team caught 4 halibuts, the biggest one 128cm. After the halibut fishing the team wanted to test fishing for some codfish. The last couple of weeks the cod fishing has been better and better so it was not long between the strikes.

Day 2 Just like day 1 John and Artur started to guide for halibut but this day they found them rather fast and after 4 hours team Russia had caught 8 halibuts and the biggest was 136cm. John had heard from a professional fisherman the day before that it had arrived huge schools of Coalfish at a specific area so all halibut jigs was removed and speed jig baits was attached to the rod! When arriving to the area John and Artur split up and searched with the sonar after the big schools. After about 30 minutes John found them and the speed jigging began. At first only coalfish about 2-3 kilo was biting on the jigs but after about one hour the drift brought the boats over bigger coalfish and 4-6 kilos was striking one after the other. As always in fishing the biggest got away, but first after pulling several meters of the super strong Accurate reels!

Day 3 The plan for the day was to go out on a short tour to get some more cod. The day started with a lot of wind which made it really difficult to fish anything at all. After a couple of hours the wind went away and it came really good weather. Right away both boats went out to a good place for cod, after catching a lot of cod the guests in Johns boat wanted to try for more halibut the last hour before they had to be back at the marina. Usually there is not much point of fishing halibut only one hour but this day was different and they caught 3 halibuts. When the tour was about to end Artur calls on the radio that they just caught a smaller halibut one 80m depth.

Heavy fish one!

Magical Mountain Lake.

Two weeks ago our guide John went with a guest, Emma Bäcker to a magical mountain lake.

To get there they first drove a couple of kilometers with our new quad bikes. When you first arrive at this lake you will think you’re in heaven, the landscape surrounding the lake is like taken from a fairytale and the water is 100% Crystal clear. In this lake the primary fishing is for the sea char that now during summer is going up the rivers to the lakes to spawn during the fall and then stay over the winter. When they first come to the lakes they are totally silver but after just a couple of days they start to change their colors and soon they are looking like a normal arctic char. This day John and Emma caught 12 chars and lost a bunch more.

During summer the fishing after sea char is possible in fjords, rivers and later on summer in mountain lakes here on Nordkyn peninsula.

John says – If you like salmon, trout ore arctic char fishing then you will love the sea char fishing. The fishing after sea char is usually practice in unusual beautiful areas at Nordkyn peninsula with great panoramas. The water both in sea and lakes are so clear that its sight fishing that is the primary technique, which makes it incredibly exciting fishing.

First cast and first fish for the day!
