SWISS HIKING TEAM TO CAPE NORDKYN

We had brave visitors from Switzerland in mid October.

After a good sleep, local information and buying the hiking map at Adventure camp Mehamn
http://www.nordicsafari.no/en.php/catalog/,cid.32,pid.28

The team started out as the last hiking team this summer season to the Northernmost point on the  European Continent, the more and more popular Cape Nordkyn

The 23 kiometer long hiking route starts at Mehamn Airport along a stoneman marked route
all the way out to the cliff at position 71.08.00 N
New fallen snow made the stony way slippery and hard.

After 3 days the group came back as planned and we were happy to see them again.

The history tells that during the 2. world war there was 2 German Junker 88 aeroplanes crash landing
at the Cape Nordkyn. The interesting link to the history of this planes you find here. http://www.luftfart.museum.no/Engelsk/Restoration/ju88.htm#JU88LAST

During the years many hikers have found peace and freedom at Cape Nordkyn - this virgin last wilderness part of Europe. The useful link to one of these enthousiast is: http://nordlandseite.de/mehamn.htm

Another great success at our halibut hot spot area

Yesterday we had another great success at our halibut hot spot area.
We went out with two boats to guide five guests at halibut fishing. five minutes on the first drift one of the guests got a strike, 10 seconds later his 10 year old son also got a strike. First came a 100 cm halibut up in the boat but the young man on the other side of the boat is still struggling with the other halibut, after 10 minutes a really great halibut comes up from the depth, we take it up in the boat and measure it to stoning 136 cm! After a quick photo session the halibut was released back into the depth. We always release halibuts over 130cm, they are very important for the halibut reproduction, to keep up a great fishing for the years to come.
We continued to fish for 6 more hours and the result was 6 more halibuts and all guests caught and felt the power from the great halibut.

Halibut tour nr2 for Russian group

Yesterday John and Arthur were out on guiding with the Russian group in two boats. The day started rather slow with a potential bigger halibut who won the fight and a couple of missed strikes. When John decided to go to an earlier unexplored area to try on the halibut fishing the fishing got really good. The strikes came directly and continued to come! At the end of the day we could count 14 halibuts in the boats!

Another great halibut tour!

Yesterday we went out on a short halibut tour with a Russian group.
The first hours we only caught one smaller halibut so the decision to go to the same area where me, S-O Larsson and David Lundqvist had fantastic fishing two days earlier was easy. On our way there we went further away to test another part of the area. During two hours we succeeded to catch 5 halibuts with a top on 132, 125 and 124cm and also lost 3 halibuts after good fights! It seems that this new area contains a large number of halibuts!

Our Fishing guide John with a happy guest!

Insanely good halibut fishing!!!

Yesterday our guide John together with S-O and David went out on a halibut expedition on a place here at Nordkyn that they had checked out on the sea chart. They all had expectations to casch halibut but that they would caught 37 halibuts on one afternoon they could never even dream of!
They all caught halibuts over 130cm (30kilo) and had not only several double strikes but also two triple strikes.

Group from Croatia sailed to Cape Nordkyn by Viking boat.

Our first group from Croatia today was sailing to the Nordkyn by the Nordlandsboat and came back with a lot of impressions and great pictures. While the Eastern Gail was strongly blowing, they were enjoying the beauty and power of nature in the North Norway. They have experienced the sailing on the real Viking boat, which is the largest typical fishing boat of the 18th century, developed from the lines of the Viking ships.  Great things happen here!

Vidar is giving instructions before the sailing trip.

Short movie about Mehamn Adventure Camp!

Last week a Swedish team was here to film an awesome fishing movie PredaTour. They also took time to cut a short video to us about Mehamn Adventure Camp.

We thank them a lot and are looking forward to see their movie when it releases in December!

Swedish fishing group explores the Barents Sea.

This is so great for all Mehamn and of course for us, Mehamn Adventure Camp that the Swedish fishing group came here to our place to explore Barents Sea. They spent five days to explore Barents Sea and the fishing on halibuts and one day for fishing on all other fish. They were successful a lot, so they caught several halibut between 120 and 130cm and the biggest, a beast of 170cm!
Also they spent one day for fresh water fishing in the mountains and it was successful enough. Two persons caught about 100 arctic chars and trout, but the biggest fish are still in the lake.
Today they are going to go for the King Crabs Safari, so we are really hoping that they will be lucky and bring lots of them, and then we will have a delicious dinner! J
This is great experience for this group, but the most important goal of their arrival were to make a spectacular video about fishing named PredaTour.  They have made a preview of it, you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImiopEfRRO4
Also they are planning to write an article and put it in some magazines. So all of us will be able to read it and also enjoy watching the film.
Their staying here was great, we spent lots of hours together and we are hoping that they will come back next year.

Amazing fishing

Last week a Swedish group came here to Adventure Camp Mehamn. Now after eight days of sea fishing we can confirm amazing catch-list. Two halibuts over 30 kilos, a couple around 15 and several Smaller. For three days ago they went out one hour from the camp to a shallower bank out on the deep sea to explore the fishing. With a lot cod over 10 kilos and several about 15 kilos the exploration was a success!
Same day the also tried to angel for redfish and manage to catch five of them with a weight of 1-2 kilos. Another day they went up on the mountains to fish for arctic char an caught some really beautiful samples.

New snowmobile and hiking tracks

Yesterday we drove out with our ATW to Gamvik, a village 20 minutes east from Mehamn. From Gamvik we went up to the mountains and made new snowmobile and hiking tracks. Now there are not many places on Nordkyn peninsula where you can’t hike  ore go with snowmobile.

The track can be tough

But also very beautiful!

Three groups drop-off at Cape Nordkyn

Early this morning went out with three boats to Cape Nordkyn to drop-off three groups that are going to hike up to the top and then walk the 23 kilometers of wild terrain back to the camp.
On the way out we stopped to take a look at the northern most house on the European mainland. There are only two ways of getting there, by boat ore a looong and tough walk

Here Vidar is at the shore to drop-off the first group

Full action on Adventure Camp Mehamn

These last weeks it has been full action here at Adventure Camp Mehamn. We have had fully booked cabins and hostel. Most of them have been here for the deep sea fishing but also for hiking, bird watching and sightseeing.

Our guest has caught a lot of cod, haddock, wolffish and 15 halibuts. A lot of our fishing guests also fish common sole directly from the cabins while they are resting from the deep sea fishing with good result. One of our guests also caught a lumpfish, which is a pretty cool fish!

Good size cod!

19 kilos halibut!

Our guide John Hedström also caught a halibut

Great start of the fishing holiday!

There are four new fishing groups here at Adventure Camp Mehamn this week and one of the groups got a really great start of their fishing holiday.  They first caught a 16 kilos halibut and then ten minutes later caught another one, and this time a halibut that weighs 22 kilos. Another group founded a big shoal of good sized cod.
Just lets hope that the week will continue in the same way! :)

Two big groups of fishermen

This week two big groups of fishermen here visit Adventure Camp Mehamn. One group from Germany and one from Switzerland. They have had really good weather and good fishing during their time here. Beside all the cod they have caught, today the group from Switzerland caught three halibuts where the biggest was about 10 kilos. Earlier this week they succeeded to catch five anglerfish! The German group has also been fishing for King Crab and caught a lot.

Brazilian Food with a Norwegian touch

During these last days we have had a guest from Brazil, Mr. Aurelio here at Adventure Camp Mehman. He is a chef and is visiting Norway to find inspiration in his cocking. Yesterday evening we gave him some King Crab and a piece of halibut that he cocked in a Brazilian way with mango and this totally wonderful kind of wook.  You can read more  about his visit at Adventure Camp Mehamn  at Mr. Aurelio’s blog http://atmagalhaes.wordpress.com/2011/06/26/pescaria-no-mar-de-barents/

Enjoying a delicious dinner

Really good fishing

This weekend our guests have had really good fishing. A lot of good size cod has been caught and even three halibuts where the biggest was 21 kilo. Two bigger halibuts won the match earlier this last week after really hard fights. One of them was all the way up to the surface and estimated to about 40 kilos before the line broke. Some of the guests have been on king crab safari and afterwards had a supreme king crab buffet!
