What Nordic Safari is all about!

Here are some impressions from a two weeks stay by our dear guest Peter visiting us at Nordic Safari.

During this time we have been guiding him every day on just a fraction of what there is to fish up here. Halibut, cod, salmon, trout, arctic char, searun arctic char plaice and many more! This is really out strength, there is always a new species to target and the fishing is more or less in world class.
We will not make this a long text blog, we will let the pictures talk for themselves!

Cod in huge numbers!

This last week the cod fishing has been spectacular! More 15 kilo cods was caught than we could keep track on.
During this last week we have had two Swedish teams here, beside all huge cods they have both succeeded to catch halibut 90, 95 and 112 cm long (check out the halibut length/weight list for weight).
Two of the halibuts was caught on one of our favorite jigs, the Mieko Predator Tail! The large schools of cod are at this moment located on 30-80 meters depth and they are filling the sonar screen to the fullest!

Also, now we are right in the beginning of the halibut season. The halibuts we have caught so far this year has probably been halibuts that has not spawned (reproduced) this winter and the halibuts that has spawned are on their way up from the depth on to the shallow plateau outside Mehamn. If not already at this moment then any day now!

Skrei on shalow waters

The other day me (John) and Albin were out fishing for skrei close to the coast outside Mehamn. It dident take long before we caught skrei, actually we caught skrei from the first minute of fihing to the last! We were fishing on 30 to 90 meters depth the whole time and the skrei was under the boat the entire time. Also i caught a halibut that came swiming up to the boat while i was tackeling on a new lure. It swam one time around the boat in the surface and i droped my jig about ten meters down before stoping and BAAAM! The rod i was fighting with, the Savage-Gear MP Pro >150g was great fun fighting this 10 kilos halibut with!

Me with a skrei caught on light gear!

Albin with a great skrei!

Russian team caught halibut and big cod!

A couple of weeks ago a big Russian team visited us at Nordic Safari, Mehamn.

The plan for the week was to fish as big fish as the weather allowed each day. Because the weather was not the best outside Mehamn during the week we trailed our three Dolmoys to one of the big fjords. It is really great that even when it’s really much wind we can almost always find shelter somewhere around the peninsula! With us these days we had our new big boat, the Minor 34. During the week the guests caught 15 halibuts where the biggest was 140cm (40-43 kilos). Now at late season the halibuts are really fat so we have to estimate how much heavier they are then on the halibut length/weight list. We add between 5-15% depending how much fatter they looks. Also this week we caught two really nice cods, one 17 kilos and one 15 kilos fjord cod. That means that these cods are local in the fjord and stays there all their lives. the 17 kilos cod was caught on Mieko predator tail and the other one with pilk.

We also went out with our biggest boat Odd Tore one morning from Mehamn to fish for cod! The group caught a lot of different species and a couple of big cods, the biggest cod for the day were about 10 kilos.

On our way out on Barents Sea!

The first halibut!

17 kilos cod!

Another halibut on the line!

And here it is.

Beautiful panorama!

Artur with the biggest halibut this week, 140cm!
Unfortunately this halibut was to injured to release.
(Usually we release all halibuts bigger then 120cm/20kilo)

Out with Odd Tore!

During 5 minutes a sea eagle was flying around the boat!

Yet another halibut on!

And here it is in the boat.
